This Skin is a series of self-portraits exploring facial expression and body language.

From an early age my reflection surprised and alienated me. The face in the mirror was never quite who I had expected to look back at me. Sometimes I would see the world as if I were peeking through a narrow visor. I felt I was a small entity hidden inside an unruly machine. My hands would appear enlarged, rendered into alien lumps of flesh I could not identify as part of myself. Sleep deprivation aggravated this dissociation between my physical body and what I understood to be me. As Barbara Ess put it: ”I am something that cannot be photographed, cannot be named, defined, translated.[..] I am not this body, but this is where I live.”
